Hello Students and Families,

I want to welcome everyone back to another year here at Godwin Heights Middle School. I know having the students back to school on August 21st was early, but it was wonderful to see all of the smiling faces walking into school ready to learn.

We are excited to see our 2017-2018 school year is off to one of the best starts in years.  Our building wide Positive Behavior Intervention Support (PBIS) program is up and running. The staff spent the first full week of school teaching building-wide expectations to all students using the “PRIDE” matrix.  P - Perseverance, R - Respect, I - Integrity, D - Disciplined, and E - Engaged.  Now we are reinforcing positive behaviors with “PRIDE” coupons.   Staff issue these coupons to students when they are seen meeting school wide expectations. Students can redeem their PRIDE coupons at our school store or by entering them in a weekly raffle.  The students are very excited to earn their rewards and the staff is thrilled with all of the positive behaviors we are seeing.

I want to remind all families of our procedures for before and after-school student drop-off and pick-up which are in front of the school on Wexford.  The large number of cars on Division and Wexford can tie up traffic around the school very quickly.  Families are encouraged to use the Administration parking lot on the opposite side of Division from the Middle School and have the student use the skywalk to cross the street.

School starts PROMPTLY at 7:30 a.m. for ALL Middle School students.  We know some families are still working out a morning routine, but it is imperative that students are in class and ready to learn at 7:30.   We know there are times when students must miss school due to illness, appointments, and other family issues.  When those things come up, parents/guardians should call the attendance line at 616.252.2070, option 4 to let us know.

A special thank you to all of our staff and students for their hard work to get this year off to one of the best starts ever. Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns at 616.252.2070 or you can email me at berlin@godwinschools.org.

Yours in education,

Aaron Berlin
